As it stands, Catholic hospitals make up a growing share of health service providers in the United States. While professional ethics guidelines encourage timely referrals for services that may be denied by a provider for religious reasons, referral practices in Catholic institutions had not be formally studied. CHAS Fellow, and Medicaid Working Group investigator, Debra Stulberg was one of three authors of a study which involved interviewing 27 OBGYN clinicians. Their results showed that Catholic hospitals sometimes obstruct OBGYN clinicians’ abilities to provide referrals for comprehensive services.
