Medicaid Working Group Member Chuanhong Liao was recently part of a team of researchers which studied the effectiveness of social media as a tool for increasing internal medicine residents’ antibiotic knowledge and awareness of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program resources. Of the 110 residents who were invited, 55 agreed to participate and 39 completed both the pre- and postintervention surveys associated with this study. The researchers found that 98% of these residents used Facebook and 58% were using Twitter. Following the 6 month intervention of Facebook and Twitter posts and tweets, knowledge of ASP website access increased from 70% to 94%. Furthermore, more of the residents indicated that they use the promoted clinical pathways “sometimes, frequently, or always.”
